I took time at the end of my message on Sunday to share about our Mission Fund for 2017 and the exciting prospect of us hosting a church planting intern for the latter half of the year. Check out the video update from the three guys preparing to plant a church in Jamaica and please pray about what the Lord would have you give on January 22nd when we receive an offering and pledges for our Mission Fund.
2016 Praise Report
Last year we began committing to a mission fund for our local church. These were funds pledged and given in 2016 beyond our tithes and offerings to extend our impact locally, globally, for church planting and for saving up for a building. By God’s grace, $8,800 was given.
- For local impact, we were able to support monthly Halaina Kumpf in an outreach to International students called Bridges International. We were able to support Reformed University Fellowship here in Jacksonville. We were able to support a crisis pregnancy center, First Coast Women’s Services, and various other missions trips.
- For global impact, we were able to support monthly Dylan & Jessica Nugent. It’s hard to believe that they have already been in Kenya doing medical missions for over a year now.
- We’ve put money aside for church planting and also to save up for a building.
If you have checked the Mission Board throughout the year, you’ve seen updates from the Nugent’s and many of the people we’ve been supporting and praying for. For all who pledged and gave to make this possible, thank you! God has called us to a glorious mission of seeing his gospel go into all the world.
Church Planting Intern
This year we believe God would have us continue in our mission fund. However, there is a particular opportunity that we believe God wants us to pursue in 2017 and it is that of having a church planting intern. Right now there are three men and their families at the Sovereign Grace Pastor’s College who are preparing to plant a church together in Jamaica. They came from Jamaica, they’ve been at the Pastor’s College since August and when they get done in June each of them has to do an internship with a local church in Sovereign Grace before they return to Jamaica. These men know enough about Sovereign Grace to know that they aligned theologically. But the internship is the time to take what they have been learning and begin to walk it out in a real-life context of pastoral ministry.
As Joe and I were praying a few months back, God began to stir our hearts to host one of these three men, a man by the name of Sheldon Campbell. So we reached out to him and asked if he would like to come preach on a Sunday. Each student has an assignment to preach in a local church and we said we would love to host Sheldon. He and his wife, Sara, are coming March 12th. Then we inquired with him and with those in Sovereign Grace who lead the church planting process and it sounds like we may be able to host Sheldon and his family for a 6-month church planting internship, July to December of this year.
By being who we are, and being intentional, our church can play one part in the overall process of seeing a church take form in Jamaica, of helping cast the gospel net so that more people can be rescued and have their lives built on the gospel of Jesus Christ. Sheldon and the other two church planters made a video that I think gives a great window into this opportunity.
Mission Fund 2017
For us to host Sheldon and his family we would need provision from the Lord that we don’t currently have. We don’t have room in our budget to have this happen, but we believe that God is able to move on all our hearts for this to happen. So this year we are going to focus the majority of our mission fund on this internship. The goal is for us raise $25k in 2017. We would still support what we are doing with local impact and global impact, but the bulk would go towards this church-planting internship.
$25k is a big goal, big for any one of us. But if everyone just gives 1% of our income above our regular tithes and offerings, we would meet that goal. If you make $60k per year, consider giving $600, which could be given all at once or broken down as $50 per month. Those who are not able to give as much, give according to what you have and those who have more to give can give according to what they have.
I share this today so you would know that this is not just a good opportunity. Joe and I have talked with the other leaders as well and this is something we believe the Lord would have us do this year and be apart of and sacrifice for. Today you are receiving a pledge card. Would you take that home with you, would you pray and if you are married, talk with your spouse about this and in two weeks, on January 22nd, we will take up an offering and pledges for our mission fund for this year.
If you have any questions about Sheldon coming, about giving to the mission fund, please talk to me or Joe.
