Prior to the preached word on Sunday, Claudia Locklin took the plunge to recite Romans 8 in its entirety. She did a great job and we were all blessed to hear this portion of God’s Word, which was hidden in her heart.
What I appreciate the most is the way that such an act compels all of us to take seriously Psalm 119:11. It says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Memorizing is about more than reciting. It’s about feeding our minds and souls on the truth about God (See Matthew 4:4). I also appreciate that Claudia is a wife and a mom. She’s busy and bilingual. It also takes some guts to recite an entire chapter in front of a group of people.
Scripture memory can be a daunting thing. When I first considered it, I thought I didn’t have either the ability nor the time. But it’s amazing what can happen when you listen to Scripture in the car, have some flash cards close by, download an app on your phone or connect with other believers for the purpose of treasuring up God’s Word in our hearts. May this encouragement from Sunday to help us have God’s Word dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16).
